I went into this blind, with a dream of one day being my own boss. I’ve learned a lot over these last couple of years and thought I’d share my top 3 tips for anyone wanting to start their own blog:
The technicalities – find a host, pick your domain, and choose your platform.
Your host will provide server space for your blog. Personally, we use Go Daddy and LOVE them. Their customer service and support repeatedly surpass my expectations. A couple of other popular hosting options include BlueHost and Pantheon.
Picking your domain is your first big step in building your brand. Pick a name that’s appealing, easy to read (even without spacing #beautyintheeast), and most importantly, available.
Choosing your platform is pivotal. One of the most used platforms is WordPress.org which is what we use. There IS a WordPress.com which is often confused with wordpress.org, so know the difference – especially when purchasing your theme. WordPress.org is versatile and extremely user friendly. There is so much support for bloggers using WordPress.org that you can find the answer to almost any question online.
Realize that you will be taking on a second job, that is, if you want your blog to be successful.
A lot of people think blogging is as easy as it is glamourous. In order to monetize your blog, you will be doing a lot more than just writing posts. To create your own career in the blogging world, you must treat it as one. Collaborations, affiliations, and advertising require a lot more than just selfies and creatively staged pictures. A good blog demands a lot of time and attention, just as any other business venture.
Be consistent, persistent, and believe in your dream.
Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was Liechtenstein, one of the smallest countries in the world. So, whether your goal is to turn your blog into your dream job or just use it regularly as an emotional outlet, my most important tip is: in order to build an audience and keep them, stick to some kind of posting schedule. You should also utilize your social media accounts and hold yourself to a posting schedule on there as well. If your favorite tv show decided that it wasn’t going to come on at the same time every week but maybe once a week and then eventually, once a month, you’d probably stop watching.
The greatest thing about blogging is how vast the industry is. Anyone who’s willing to put in the work and a little bit of hustle, can create their dream job and run a successful blog.
