Going green – Why I’m Switching to Natural Beauty Products

I’ve been slowly switching out a lot of products in our household to a natural, cruelty free, organic option – from cleaners, to meals, and most recently, my beauty products. Why?

Like all parents, my husband and I put our kids first. So when our daughter started eating ‘real’ food, we made sure everything she consumed was the absolute best option – organic, natural, cruelty-free, etc. Well, our first baby is now 2 years old and gone are the days where she eats/does what we tell her to and instead, wants to eat/do everything we do. Which made us think – why don’t we treat ourselves as well as we treat our kids? Why aren’t we as conscious about what we put in and on our bodies as we are about what we give them? We need to be just as healthy and well functioning as our kids and we obviously need to show them a healthy lifestyle because simply telling them is no longer working.

We knew that switching to a natural diet would be a little tough in the beginning but I really underestimated how tough it would be to find natural and organic beauty, hair, and skin products to replace my all-time favorites. I haven’t been able to replace everything and I’m still in the middle of trying a bunch, but so far, I’ve found a handful that I really LOVE. Here’s a few of my old go-to’s and their new natural replacement:

1. Moisturizing + Illuminizing Primer

OLD: MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream $33

New + Natural:

Tata Harper Illuminizing Moisturizer $85

moisturizer

Benefits:

  • Instantly illuminates subtle contours with light for skin that has the plump, glowing look of youth.
  • Provides hydration and moisture barrier protection.
  • Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Seriously, magic in a bottle. I haven’t tried a Tata Harper product that I didn’t absolutely love.

2. Setting Powder

OLD: Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder $38

NEW + NATURAL:

ILIA Soft Focus Finishing Powder $34.00

setting powder

Benefits:

  • Blend of organic powder and oils, aloe leaf extract for soothing, and infused with passion fruit and rosemary oils to treat inflammation
  • Translucent
  • Oil control, reduces shine
  • 100% natural, vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, talc free

Even if you’re not in the market for natural/vegan/cruelty-free makeup, this one is worth a try! It’s so hard to find good setting powder that gives you the perfect soft focus look and doesn’t look cakey, but Ilia has nailed it.

3. MASCARA

OLD: TOO FACED Better Than Sex Mascara $23

I loved this mascara for SO long. This was just about the only mascara I could pile on without false eyelashes and still get a ton of compliments.

NEW + NATURAL:

PHYSICIAN’S FORMULA Organic wear® 100% Natural Origin Mascara in Ultra Black $9.95

Benefits:

  • 100% Natural Origin formula contains the purest ingredients
  • 100% Recyclable Eco-Brush,100% Free of Harsh Chemicals, Synthetic Preservatives, Parabens, Clumping, Smudging, Flaking, Fibers & Dyes
  • 70% of the Total Ingredients are from Organic Farming

4. Highlighter

OLD: Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit $40

NEW + NATURAL:

Orglamix Cream Luminizer in Inspirit $18

Benefits:

  • Handcrafted, cruelty free, nut-free, vegan, and gluten-free
  • Available in 3 beautiful colors for all skin types

This highlighter is creamy, natural, and gorgeous! It’s gives off a subtle dewy highlight perfect for anyone looking to achieve the signature J.Lo glow.

5. Setting Spray

Old: Urban Decay All-Nighter $32.00

New + Natural:

Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herb, and Rosewater $12.00

mario badescu

Benefits:

  • Sets makeup and soothes skin
  • Hydrating
  • Lightweight

This one isn’t as natural and organic as I’d like but it’s definitely a lot more gentle with much more skin benefits than my previous setting spray. Plus, the rose scent is addicting.

I’m still searching for a more natural replacement for my MAC face and body foundation. But, I’m super excited to get my shipment of natural makeup from Sephora and 100% Pure. I’ll be sure to share my favorites! Keep an eye out for my new alternative natural hair care products and how I still manage to stretch out my time between washes to 4-5 days with my new natural/organic products!

A Letter To My 18-Year-Old Self

When I was 18 years old, you couldn’t tell me anything! I was grown and I knew everything about pretty much everything. Oh how laughable that is now! When they say hindsight is 20/20, they couldn’t be anymore correct! I don’t know if it’s my ten year High School reunion quickly approaching, or that my 20’s are going to be coming to an end, but I have been doing some serious reflecting lately. Although I wouldn’t say I have any regrets about the last ten years of life, because ultimately they lead me to where I am now, I would definitely tweak a few things if I ever had the chance. Those tweaks are listed below in a letter to my 18-year-old self.

Dear 18-year-old Leigha,

Don’t Be Such a Bitch.

You know the expression, “I thought you were such a bitch before I got to know you”? Yeah well it definitely applied to me, except that a lot of people still thought I was a bitch even after they got to know me. I honestly don’t know why I was so mean at 18. Sometimes I think it was attributed to growing up in a home where anger was an easily expressed emotion, so I behaved the same. But then other times I think it was just because I had a sour attitude and needed to grow up. Regardless, my first advice to little miss sassy brat, is don’t be such a bitch. The things that are making you angry now won’t even matter in a few years. Like, the boy who was sleeping with his ex-girlfriend the whole time he was dating you. He really isn’t worth the anger that causes you to strangle him in-between classes in front of the whole school (guilty). And the girls that you and all your friends swear you HATE, are actually going to turn out to be respectable people that you don’t even have a problem with. So don’t stress everything as much, and don’t be so ugly! You’re going to soon learn that your favorite people in life are the genuinely kind and compassionate ones, not the bitchy ones.

Don’t Date for at Least the Next FIVE Years.

Trust me on this one girlfriend. You will save yourself from some bad heart breaks and SO much wasted time. Now, I know every relationship is a learning experience; learning what you do and don’t want in a partner, learning what you will and will not give to a partner, and ultimately learning the type of relationship you want to strive for. However, I think learning all of those things closer to your mid-twenties is the better route. Instead of spending all that time in relationships that aren’t the right ones, save these years to focus on yourself; to learn about yourself, to grow as an individual, and to dedicate to making life long memories and friends. And let me just give you a sneak preview sister, the boy you spend hours commuting home to see every weekend, the one you miss out on your college football games and beach parties for, he cheats on you at a house party and then tells every lie in the book to cover it up (true story). And then the guy who you try so hard to impress to be what you think he wants from you, you run into him downtown one night where he blankly stares at you while holding hands with another girl (also true story). Just do yourself the favor Leigha, don’t date for the next five years. Your early twenties are your selfish years, so you go be selfish girl!

Study abroad!

Okay, I may have lied when I said I didn’t have any regrets. Looking back on this one, the chance to take college classes in another Country, with your peers, all set up and organized through your school, yeah I DO regret not doing that. Never in your life are you going to have a more perfect time to do this. You have no huge responsibilities, no career, no babies, AND a twenty-year-old drinking ability! (Gawd how much fun that could have allowed you to have). Forget about the hundred excuses you tell yourself on why you can’t go, like how much it costs, or your restaurant job, or who will feed your cats. Just do it! Take out the student loan to pay for the extra tuition. Put in a leave of absence at your job. Bribe your roommate with sweet sediments to keep your cats alive for the semester. Whatever it takes, make it happen. Cause life is only going to get busier, crazier, and more stressful the older you get. You won’t get an opportunity like that again. And if you’re smart and listened to the ‘don’t date anyone’ advice, you won’t have that stupid relationship holding you back either!

Lastly, for the sentimental side of yourself, hug the ones you love a little tighter each time you see them from here on out. You’re not going to have them all forever.

Happily Ever After isn’t One Size Fits All

I met Nick, my now husband, when I was 18 years old. Since then we’ve built a wonderful life together and I’m grateful for every second of it. Most people dream of meeting their soulmate at a young age, settling down, starting their career, and creating a family. I mean, as a girl who grew up in the 90’s, that was all I’ve ever wanted. In a quick summary, my love story and adult life may seem ‘perfect’ – but to me, I never thought so.
When I was planning my wedding, most of my friends were traveling. I’ve spent many nights awkwardly accompanying my single girlfriends on a girls’ night out feeling like I belonged anywhere but at the dive bar in six inch heels sipping on a rail vodka-soda. I often bite my tongue when other girls talk about their college dating experiences or when someone shares an anti-young marriage article on social media. From my eyes, I’ve always been a sore thumb in my friendship circles.
My point: the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

There is no one size fits all happy ending no matter how many times Disney has tried to tell us there is.

If you want to be single and travel the world – do it. If you want to start your family at a young age – DO IT. I absolutely hate seeing other women shame each other on social media for picking a different path in life.
Even now, as a married 27-year-old with two babies, my list of mom friends is almost as short as the amount of times I’ve washed my hair this week. But, I’M HAPPY.  My career may not be where I’d thought it would be but I’m sure there’s someone out there who’s hoping to find her soulmate.
Life’s a lot better when you create your happiness. Comparison truly is the thief of joy. Choose to embrace diversity, uplift others, and support the different decisions they choose to make.

My go-to Quick & Easy Dinners

Lets face it, cooking a made-from-scratch meal every night is not always realistic. Some days are just flat out exhausting, especially when you are 37 weeks pregnant and the size of a mini horse. While you are driving home in that 5 o’clock trance, the LAST thing you want to do is think about the dinner you will now be obligated, I mean pleased, to make for your family. Being that I am probably the worlds worst cook (part laziness, part lack of desire to learn), I have mastered some quick and easy dinners that are sure to please a hungry belly. Now i’m not saying these are the healthiest or most organic of meals – but in my house, you can either eat it or starve! 😀

1. Publix Rotisserie Chicken

Dinners Publix Rotisserie Chicken jpg

This is a staple in my house hold. It is just too easy to run into Publix and grab a perfectly/deliciously cooked chicken. Could I have cooked a whole chicken by myself and saved a couple bucks? Sure. Will I ever? Hell to the no. While i’m in the store, i’ll grab the sides for tonight’s dinner as well. I usually rotate between a carton of Bob Evans mashed potatoes, or a Mac N Cheese of some sort. Throw in 2 cans of green beans or carrots and voila! Dinner is served in the amount of time it took you to heat up the potatoes.

2. Tacos

Dinners Old El Paso Dinner Kit jpg

I have an Ole El Paso Taco kit in my pantry at all times. I mean all times. It has saved my butt so many times when I am in a pinch for a quick dinner. Just brown up your ground beef, mix in the kit’s ingredients, and bake your shells. My family personally doesn’t add all the extras to our tacos like lettuce, tomatoes, olives, etc., which makes this meal even easier. Meat, cheese, and sour cream and the hubby is a happy amigo! But if you do like all the toppings, swing in your nearest grocery store on the way home and grab them babies!

3. Hamburger Helper

Dinners Hamburger Helper Cheeseburger-Macaroni jpg

I feel like I should be embarrassed to list this one. But, i’m not. I personally like Hamburger Helper, specifically the cheeseburger macaroni one. It’s quick and easy and can be paired with almost any vegetable side. Throw in some fresh baked croissant roll and you’ve hit the jackpot. A little tip: we like to use ground turkey for this dinner. It tastes just as good and limits our red meat intake for that week.

4. Ham Steak

Dinners Smithfield Ham Steak jpg

Again, so easy. Ham steak can actually be eaten cold, as it’s already been cooked. But, I like to brown it up a little bit in a pan and give it some good color. Add a pasta side, vegetable and some buttered dinner rolls and you are set!

5. Frozen Ravioli

Dinners Rana Ravioli jpg

My local grocery stores sell the Rana brand of bagged Ravioli which can go from freezer to plate in about 12 minutes. My family loves the spinach & ricotta ones, but they offer a variety of others. If i’m feeling extra fancy, i’ll grab a jar of my favorite sauce, red or white, and pour it over the ravioli. Although this is not necessary as they are delicious by themselves too! Pop some Texas Toast in the oven, and you’ve got yourself a little pasta dinner in no time.

Have any other quick and easy dinners that you swear by? Share them in the comments below! The more go-to meals in my recipe book the better!
