Going green – Why I’m Switching to Natural Beauty Products

I’ve been slowly switching out a lot of products in our household to a natural, cruelty free, organic option – from cleaners, to meals, and most recently, my beauty products. Why?

Like all parents, my husband and I put our kids first. So when our daughter started eating ‘real’ food, we made sure everything she consumed was the absolute best option – organic, natural, cruelty-free, etc. Well, our first baby is now 2 years old and gone are the days where she eats/does what we tell her to and instead, wants to eat/do everything we do. Which made us think – why don’t we treat ourselves as well as we treat our kids? Why aren’t we as conscious about what we put in and on our bodies as we are about what we give them? We need to be just as healthy and well functioning as our kids and we obviously need to show them a healthy lifestyle because simply telling them is no longer working.

We knew that switching to a natural diet would be a little tough in the beginning but I really underestimated how tough it would be to find natural and organic beauty, hair, and skin products to replace my all-time favorites. I haven’t been able to replace everything and I’m still in the middle of trying a bunch, but so far, I’ve found a handful that I really LOVE. Here’s a few of my old go-to’s and their new natural replacement:

1. Moisturizing + Illuminizing Primer

OLD: MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream $33

New + Natural:

Tata Harper Illuminizing Moisturizer $85

  • Instantly illuminates subtle contours with light for skin that has the plump, glowing look of youth.
  • Provides hydration and moisture barrier protection.
  • Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Seriously, magic in a bottle. I haven’t tried a Tata Harper product that I didn’t absolutely love.

2. Setting Powder

OLD: Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder $38

ILIA Soft Focus Finishing Powder $34.00

setting powder

  • Blend of organic powder and oils, aloe leaf extract for soothing, and infused with passion fruit and rosemary oils to treat inflammation
  • Translucent
  • Oil control, reduces shine
  • 100% natural, vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, talc free

Even if you’re not in the market for natural/vegan/cruelty-free makeup, this one is worth a try! It’s so hard to find good setting powder that gives you the perfect soft focus look and doesn’t look cakey, but Ilia has nailed it.

OLD: TOO FACED Better Than Sex Mascara $23

I loved this mascara for SO long. This was just about the only mascara I could pile on without false eyelashes and still get a ton of compliments.

PHYSICIAN’S FORMULA Organic wear® 100% Natural Origin Mascara in Ultra Black $9.95

  • 100% Natural Origin formula contains the purest ingredients
  • 100% Recyclable Eco-Brush,100% Free of Harsh Chemicals, Synthetic Preservatives, Parabens, Clumping, Smudging, Flaking, Fibers & Dyes
  • 70% of the Total Ingredients are from Organic Farming

4. Highlighter

OLD: Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit $40

Orglamix Cream Luminizer in Inspirit $18

  • Handcrafted, cruelty free, nut-free, vegan, and gluten-free
  • Available in 3 beautiful colors for all skin types

This highlighter is creamy, natural, and gorgeous! It’s gives off a subtle dewy highlight perfect for anyone looking to achieve the signature J.Lo glow.

5. Setting Spray

Old: Urban Decay All-Nighter $32.00

New + Natural:

Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herb, and Rosewater $12.00

mario badescu

  • Sets makeup and soothes skin
  • Hydrating
  • Lightweight

This one isn’t as natural and organic as I’d like but it’s definitely a lot more gentle with much more skin benefits than my previous setting spray. Plus, the rose scent is addicting.

I’m still searching for a more natural replacement for my MAC face and body foundation. But, I’m super excited to get my shipment of natural makeup from Sephora and 100% Pure. I’ll be sure to share my favorites! Keep an eye out for my new alternative natural hair care products and how I still manage to stretch out my time between washes to 4-5 days with my new natural/organic products!

My Current Mommy Must-Haves + New LYLAS Video!

My mommy essentials are constantly changing with seasons, development stages, and every other thing life throws at us! I’m also in a small state of disbelief that in just two months, we’ll no longer have two girls under two years old! But, do I really thinking having a terrible two-er and an almost one-year-old will be any easier? Yes and no – but I’ll save my reasons why for a different post. 😉

Currently, Giuliana, my oldest, is just about 22 months old and Isabel, our baby, is close to 7 months. Life these days is full of hair pulling, peek-a-boo, DROOL, many meal times, and LOTS of loads of laundry. I put together a list of my current mommy must-haves that help me get through each day and also some beauty products that I’m absolutely loving!

To see the entire list and hear why I chose each item, head on over to our new YouTube channel: LYLAS!  or watch below!

Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit boxes Jpg

Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit – What I HATE to Admit

If you’re like me, you have a strong love/hate relationship with the Kardashian/Jenner family. You HATE that someone is always talking about them, yet you are doing nothing to stop their popularity – considering you’ve (willingly) watched every episode of their TV show, AND you follow them on all social media platforms. Guilty. So when the Kylie Jenner lip kit phenomenon occurred, I couldn’t have rolled my eyes hard enough. I mean, were people really buying a lip product from someone who doesn’t even have her own lips? (Shade intended). To answer that simply, hell yes they were! And as much as I wanted to hate on it, the pictures all looked fabulous.

Being the don’t-knock-it-till-you-try-it person I am, I knew I would eventually cave in and give at least one of her lip kits a try. So I did. And can you guess what happened? The words almost hurt leaving my mouth… I LOVED IT. Okay, there I said it. I loved my Kylie Jenner lip kit from the very second I took it out of the box. But how could this happen? I wanted so badly to hate it and tell all my girls how terrible it was. Except, it wasn’t.

All About the Lip Kit

The first thing I loved about the kit was the lip liner. It was so creamy and easy to apply. It didn’t crumble or bleed, and went on so smooth. When I opened the actual color, I thought it would have some type of funky smell for sure. But nope. Nothing. The liquid lipstick went on just as easy and with just one swipe across my lips, I had amazing pigmentation and coverage. It dried in less than a minute, and again, it was smooth! (Other matte lipsticks I’ve tried have cracked and creased shortly after applying them). I stared at myself in the mirror for a couple minutes in disbelief honestly, and then obviously jumped right on snapchat to send multiple kissy face selfies to Krystal (she loves my snaps, I promise).

Okay, okay – I liked it. But maybe I just got lucky and picked a good color the first time? I needed to thoroughly test this product out before I could say it was the best matte liquid lipstick I had ever used, right? Well, since you insisted, I ordered another. And then another. I’m not even lying. I am now the PROUD owner of close to $200 in Kylie Jenner lip kits. GASP! And you know what, I’m not even ashamed. I know its price can be pretty steep for some people, but I like to rationalize it by saying this: you actually get two products – the lipstick and the lip liner. So average that out, and they’re $15 a piece. Other makeup brands have liners that sell for much more than that! My favorite color at the moment is Posie K, which is dark enough to make a statement, but light enough to pair with the gorgeous Spring weather.

If you’re thinking about trying Kylie’s lip kits, do yourself a favor, GET ONE! You won’t regret it, I promise.

OPI Fiji Collection 2017 Feature Image jpg

OPI | Fiji Inspired Polishes for Spring & Summer

OPI recently launched their 2017 Spring & Summer nail polish collection inspired by the Islands of Fiji. Let me just tell you, they do not disappoint. But lets be real, does OPI ever disappoint? (That would be no). This collection has fun and vibrant colors sure to help your nails pop this Spring. And of course they’re accompanied by OPI’s signature cute and sassy names. I don’t know about you but when i’m picking out a color at the salon, 9 times out of 10, my final decision comes down to the name of the polish. I love to come home and ask my Fiancé if he likes my ‘Cajun Shrimp’ nails? To which he’ll usually respond, “You mean your red nails?”. *Side eye* Uh, no honey dearest, I mean my CAJUN SHRIMP nails. (Get it right!).

But enough about him – This collection holds twelve new shades, with at least one bold polish for every color of the rainbow. Even better, every color they launched with this collection has a matching Infinite Shine polish AND Gel polish. Say what?! That alone pretty much covers the preference of every polish wearing girl out there. Well played OPI! Also, their website is phenomenal. It allows visitors to virtually ‘try on’ the polishes by selecting from a range of skin tones, as well as nail lengths. No really, try it here! You can also view all 12 shades below.

OPI Fiji Collection – Colors and Names
OPI-Fiji-Spring-Summer-2017-Color-Names jpg

OPI-Fiji-Spring-Summer-2017-Color-Names-2My personal favorites from the collection are: ‘Getting Nadi On My Honeymoon‘ – because who doesn’t love a good pink? ‘I Can Never Hut Up‘ – a nice icy grey that will pair well with any Spring wardrobe. And ‘Suzi Without a Paddle‘ – the tranquil blue that just makes me somehow feel cool, calm, and collected.

Being that the Fiji Collection is still new, I would say call your favorite salon and ask if they have the new shades in or not. Or – you can always purchase the color yourself from any beauty supply store, and bring it to your salon! I love doing it that way. Then I know for sure that the bottle hasn’t been diluted a bunch by salon staff, and I get to add it to my polish collection for any touchups or repainting. I hope you get to try out a couple of the new shades this Spring/Summer. Comment your favorite colors below!
